The museum holds an impressive collection of European masters from the 16th to 19th centuries, including some of the most emblematic works of Rembrandt, Rubens, Dürer or Bosch, as well as by the Italian Masters from Fra Angelico to Titian. However, it holds the greatest number of pieces by Velázquez, El Greco and Goya, impressive considering that the Prado does not fit the mould of an encyclopaedic museum as it does not have works from all periods or schools. Regardless, it has one of the most exquisite and valued collections in the word. Some of the greatest treasures are Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights , Rubens’s Three Graces , Velázquez’s Las Meninas , Goya’s Third of May 1808 , or Jacob’s Dream by José de Ribera, to name a few. The art gallery itself has over 8,600 works in its inventory, amongst which 4,900 are Spanish works from the 12th century to the end of the 19th century. Moreover, it has over 1,000 sculptures and a magnificent collection of over 5,000 prints and 8,000 drawings currently kept in the Jerónimos building. Together with the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofia museums, the Prado makes up part of the Art Triangle , sited in the area of the Paseo del Prado, one of the stateliest of the Spanish capital’s boulevards. se ajusta a los estándares de un museo enciclopédico, ya que no cuenta con obras de todas las épocas o escuelas. Sin embargo posee una de las colecciones más exquisitas y valoradas del mundo. Cabe destacar algunos de sus mayores tesoros, como son El jardín de las Delicias de El Bosco, Las tres Gracias de Rubens, Las Meninas de Velázquez, Los fusilamientos de Francisco de Goya o El sueño de Jacob, de José de Ribera, por citar algunos. Sólo la pinacoteca sobrepasa las 8.600 piezas inventariadas, de entre las cuales 4.900 pertenecen a pintura española desde el siglo XII a finales del XIX. Además, cuenta con más de 1.000 esculturas y una magnífica colección de cerca de 5.000 estampas y 8.000 dibujos que actualmente se conservan en el edificio de los Jerónimos. Junto con el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza y el Museo Reina Sofía, conforma lo que se ha dado a conocer popularmente como el Triángulo del Arte , ubicado en la zona del Paseo del Prado, uno de los bulevares de más rancio abolengo de la capital de España.
