Observan- do la vanidad y la ambigüedad de la noción de progreso, mu- chos artistas se orientan hacia los mundos ocultos, reaniman los mitos y explotan los nuevos descubrimientos sobre los sueños. Tras los cuentos fantásticos de Edgar Poe, Charles Baudelaire, Théophile Gautier y Villiers de L’Isle-Adam, plan- tean y sugieren inquietan- tes dilemas que enfrentan al hombre con sus terrores ancestrales y sus frecuen- tes contradicciones: el sal- vajismo y la perversidad ocultos en cada ser huma- no, el riesgo de degenera- ción colectiva, la angustio- sa perplejidad del día a día. Mientras que algunos artis- tas como Khnopff, Spilliaert y Klinger intentan disolver silenciosamente la fronte- ra entre realidad y sueño, vemos resurgir en Ensor, Stuck y Rops, en plena efervescencia de la segun- da revolución industrial, tumultuosas y fantásticas hordas de brujas, esque- letos risueños, demonios desfigurados, satanes lú- bricos, Medusas y demás Esfinges que, lejos de significar una vuelta atrás obscurantista hacia el pasado, se traducen en un desencanto lúcido, provocador y ocioso, frente al presente, y the unconscious, of dreams and of intoxication as the basis for artistic creation, completing the triumph of the imagination over the principle of reality, and thus, putting the finishing touches to the spirit itself of Dark Romanticism. At the same time, the cinema seized on Frankenstein, Faust and other masterpieces of this genre whose unforgettable scenes have firmly estab- lished them in the collective imagination. By calling forth the visionary creations of Goya, Fuseli, Blake, Delacroix, Hugo, Friedrich, Böcklin, Moreau, Stuck, Ensor, Mucha, Redon, Dali, Ernst, Bellmer, Klee and numerous other artists and film makers, the ex- hibition also enables us to reassess and gain new in- sight into the literary and artistic sources of the world of dark fantasy which continues to have a significant influence on the films, video games and musical works of today.
