A lo largo de estos últimos años, y a sorprendente velocidad, las nuevas tecnologías han dado acceso a nuevas formas de comunicación dentro también del sector del arte, modificando hábitos y canales de comercialización. Pero además, el actual mercado del arte vive inmerso en un clima de incertidumbre que, junto a la incapacidad para generar recursos, supone un lastre importante en el mantenimiento de las estructuras tradicionales. Formación e imaginación son ambas importantes para poder avanzar en todos los sentidos, aunque también hace falta carácter y estilo, algo que identifica y personaliza la línea artística de cada galerista. Para obtener una visión más precisa sobre este tema e intentar saber qué opinan los profesionales del sector, hemos planteado ocho preguntas clave a cinco prestigiosas galerías de arte durante su reciente participación en la última edición de ARCO. Éstas han sido sus respuestas. El nuevo papel de las GALERÍAS 1. Ser galerista requiere de una especial vocación. No se trata sólo de vender arte, sino de asesorar y transmitir al visitante toda una secuencia de emociones. Sin embargo, ¿cómo consigue satisfacer al cliente que confía en su galerista, pero cuyos gustos personales no coinciden con los suyos? 2. ¿Qué busca en un artista, o en la obra de un artista aún desconoci- do en el mercado? ¿Qué es lo que le seduce? 3. ¿Qué señales le hacen darse cuen- ta en un determinado momento de que un artista pudiera no estar a la altura de sus expectativas, aún llevando ya un tiempo trabajando con él? 4. En todo buen galerista ¿subyace un gran coleccionista? 5. ¿Cree que el papel de la galería de arte contemporáneo ha cambiado sustancialmente? ¿En qué aspec- tos? 6. ¿Cómo definiría la posición estética de su galería? ¿En qué tipo de ex- presión artística está actualmente más interesado/a y por qué? 7. ¿Considera que la pintura como forma de expresión ha quedado obsoleta? 8. ¿Cree que la falta de interés del público por el arte actual sólo se debe a la crisis económica? The new role of Galleries With surprising speed over the past few years new technology has provided us with access to new ways of communicating within the art sector, changing habits and ways of commercialising and selling. Moreover, the current art market is surrounded by a cloud of uncertainty which, together with an inability to generate resources, is something of a dead weight when trying to maintain the traditional art structures. Training and imagination are both important to be able to move forward, although style and character are also necessary to identify and personalise the artistic trajectory of every gallery owner. In order to get a clearer, more precise view of this topic and to try and find out what professionals think, we have created a series of eight essential questions to be put to five prestigious art galleries during their participation in the recent edition of ARCO. Their answers are as follows. 1. You need to have a special vocation to be a gallery owner. It’s not just about selling art, but about advising a client, and conveying a whole selection of emotions to them. However, how do you manage to satisfy a client who trusts their gallery owner, but whose personal taste don’t coincide with your own? 2. What do you look for in an artist, or in the work of an artist as-yet undiscover- ed by the market? What is it that draws your attention? 3. What are the signs that make you realize that an artist may not meet your expectations, even if you have been working with them for a while? 4. Is there a great collector inside every good gallery owner? 5. Do you think that the basic role of the contemporary galleries has changed today? In which aspects? 6. How would you define your gallery’s aesthetic position? What kind of artistic expression are you interested in at the moment, and why? 7. Do you think that painting as a form of expression has become obsolete? 8. Do you think that the public’s lack of interest in contemporary art is exclu- sively down to the economic recession?
