artistas contemporáneos Ángel Luis Iglesias In confidence The old magic of capturing the physical and the psychic, marrying them to beauty, character, emotion and mystery is something that happens often in these portraits or self-portraits of Ángel Luis Iglesias, who presents himself as another link in the chain that ties the old to the new in the heart of time. If every generation did not have the right –and obligation– to express what they see and how they see it, there would be no trace of man, we would live precariously, beyond the spirituality that culture provides and helps to construct ourselves. The great artists, whose works become known for their quality, never stop others from developing, but rather help them to emerge. Tomás Paredes Eric Wert The Glorification of Still Life Born in Oregon in 1976 and a doctor in art from Chicago’s Northwestern University, Wert has worked as a scientific illustrator for the city’s Natural History Museum, and this can be seen in his work. However, his still lifes –floral, succulently coloured vanitas– are not content only to display the beauty and precision of his profuse detail, but also suggest and narrate fascinating, occasionally ill-fated, stories that invoke both vitality and ephemerality. They talk of existence, relationships or even beliefs, because in the light of the impermanent the value of the experience of the present grows. The cashmere fabric of his ground weave, together with the fallen objects –broken jars, scattered petals– distorted reflections or drops of water on the floor are there to provoke a greater sensation of complexity and bewilderment, giving each story a dramatic edge. Ángel Luis Iglesias En confianza La vieja magia de captar lo físico y lo psíquico, aliándolos a la belleza, al carácter, a la emoción y al misterio, es algo que ocurre en muchos de estos retratos o autorretratos de Ángel Luis Iglesias, que se presenta como un eslabón más de esa cadena que anuda lo antiguo y lo nuevo en el corazón del tiempo. ¡Si cada generación no tuviera derecho –y obligación a la vez– de expresar lo que ve y cómo lo ve, no existiría ninguna huella del hombre, viviríamos en precario, ajenos a la espiritualidad que la cultura impulsa y ayuda a construirnos. Tomás Paredes Eric Wert La glorificación del bodegón Nacido en 1976 en Oregón, se doctoró en arte por la Universidad Northwestern de Chicago y ha trabajado como ilustrador científico para el Museo de Historia Natural de la misma ciudad, algo que queda patente en sus obras. Sin embargo sus bodegones –floridos Vanitas de jugoso colorido–, no se contentan con desplegar la belleza y precisión de su profuso detalle, sino que sugieren, narran fascinantes historias –a veces malogradas–, que implican tanto lo vital como lo efímero: la existencia, las relaciones o incluso las creencias, porque al calor de lo que no es permanente crece el valor de la experiencia del presente. Los tejidos de cachemir de los telones de fondo junto a los diferentes objetos caídos –jarrones rotos, pétalos esparcidos–, reflejos distorsionados o gotas de agua salpicando el suelo están ahí para provocar una mayor sensación de complejidad y desconcierto, proporcionando un punto dramático a cada relato. 89
