LLEI D'ART 11
Pissarro CaixaForum Barcelona Until 26th January 2014 Called ‘the first Impressionist’ by his friend Cézanne, Camille Pissarro (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, 1830 – Paris, 1903) is perhaps both the essential figure of Impressionism and the least well-known. Together with his friend Monet –who came to eclipse him– the two artists gave the first push to the group that came to be known as the Impressionists. Pissarro had great influence on Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh, being a teacher to the pioneers of modern art. Pissarro seeks to restore the artist’s reputation and to underline his contribution to the field beyond artistic creation: his approach to life involved returning to a simple life of nature and country, and promoted collective activities as a new way of understanding art. This eventually led to the Impressionist exhibitions, conceived as an alternative to the official art salons. The exhibition, organised by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the “la Caixa” Foundation is the first and most comprehensive of Camille Pissarro ever shown in Spain. It brings together 67 oil paintings from all his periods from museums and private collections from around the world. This extraordinary collection allows us to reconstruct the path of this ahead-of- his-time artist using the places he frequented and the landscapes he painted in each of them, from his early period when he began to paint on the banks of the Marne river to his latter years and his cityscapes of Paris, Rouen and, finally, Le Havre.
