or iconographic references. The painting is committed, and is able to skilfully incorporate subtle contemporary touches, such as the slenderness of the forms or the backgrounds, which are on occasions blurred, bringing a moment of abstraction focussed on a selection of chestnutty, earthy, ochre colours that dull before the light, sensuality and fullness of Sergeev’s figures, heightening their profoundly emotional meaning. Sleeping The oil painting that features on our cover – inspired by ancient painting – recalls the undoubted sensuous of the odalisque , something Sergeev achieves thanks to his masterful contrast of colours and textures, softening the skin with an interesting play of light and shadows that the artist executed particularly well. He works to create an illusion of texture on the materials with care and skill. The figure’s profile marks a different phase and achieves modernity. It is clear in this work that colour is the protagonist, given its clean definition and strong contrasts. The stretched-out, face down pose is refined, but also naïvely suggestive, while the choice of colours shows an eagerness to re-update classic values. Luisa Noriega Oleg Sergeev.
