LLEI D'ART 13

LuisaNoriega Some erudite scholars prefer to talk about art as a wholewhenquestionedon thepossible career paths of a recent graduate inFineArts. All of them attempt to focus on an artist’s personal production, but there are multiple options that are also linked to art that allow aperson to find their way in lifewithout abandoning their vocation. Thepossibilities offeredby art are in factmuchmore numerous and enriching than itmight seem at first glance. In fact, creativity is an essential prerequisite innearly all fields of work, and canbe perfectly integrated into scores of jobswhere aesthetic and imagination areprized. Itmight well be that thepricepaid for all of the above is thede-professionalisationof art, although I’m not sure that this is such a catastrophe. Rather, itmight bequite the opposite, because itmightmean carrying out one’s vocationwithout aiming for or desiring the social and economic recognition that themajority do not reach. Failing todo this leads to the artist feeling misunderstood and even swollenwith resentment. Not for nothingdoes the term ‘amateur’mean ‘onewho loves’: this quandary is no reason to slashone’s veins, but rather it is an elegant anddiscreet proof of a true love for art. Artistswho say that noone understands their art, are almost always bad artistswhose art, unfortunately, canbe understoodperfectlywell. JoNesbø (Norwegianwriter andmusician) Here lies thedilemma: toget by accepting commissions andputting upwithgallery owners’ whims or clueless buyerswho aren’t interested inwhat you cando, rather inwhat theywant you todo. Or, you can find a source of income that frees you from the slavery of having to create ondemandor sell at any price. One canbe an artist without doing it each and every day. Great things canbedone if there is talent and vocation - in fact, this dual vocation requires adiscipline that is always constructive. Although today buying ‘art’ is a luxury in the eyes of meremortals, not everything is aboutmoney and the artists has beenput on apillar in strategicplaces that really they shouldn’t be. This hasn’t really done art any favours: those artists, thosepoor spoilt rich kids slum it up at their will under the aegis of their galleries, knowing full well that fortune has smiled upon them. Others queue up in their warehouseswaiting tobe called. Many never see the light of day. Sadlywe live in a hugepuddlewhere vanity splashes about, andmany simply buywithno knowledge of what they’re acquiring and evenwithout really liking it either: a fair punishment for such frivolity andgreed. This unmeasureddesire to hack one’sway to the top createsmonsters celebrated by themedia that are completely lacking inglory or prestige, whose haughtiness andpetulance grows like foam, eggedonby the applause of themediocreman. Thankfully, it is just that, foam. LuisaNoriega © WPWide.com 19
