Daniel Coves Aportrait of the hidden Ongood authority, the artist presents uswith apictorial reflection, a new visionof how to interpret the essence of aportrait: the thing hidingbehindmasses of hair invertedover the face, or simplywith their back turned tous an anodyne, neutral backdrop that doesn’t distract. Itmakes the viewer focus exclusively on the figure, or rather what it wants to say to uswith this depiction. It is as if thebackwere a signof disdain, of ‘ignorance’, of absence located in the empty surroundings it is submerged in. Loneliness, individuality, isolation, a true ignorance of the character and, in turn, theperson depicteddoes the same to the viewer. They livewith their back turned to the context, immersed in absorption anddisplaying it in all its rawness. The feelingof abandonment, of not believingone is interesting to anyone couldbe the summary of a person in the same conditions asCoves shows us. The immigrant disillusioned upon seeing that all those oppotunities sketched in theirmindwere all in vain, feelingmelancholy anddespondent. Or on the contrary, the feelingof rage and anger at theworld formaking themguilty for their situation. At any rate, the feelings are hidden, and the facial features andgaze are falsely composed. The soul remains reserved. De buenamano el artista nos presenta una reflexión pictórica, una visión nuevade interpretaciónde la esenciadel retrato. Aquelloque seesconde trascabelleras invertidassobreel rostroo, simplemente, de espaldas sobre fondos anodinos, neutros, sin que capten la atención. Hace que el espectador se centre exclusivamente en la figura, o mejor dicho, en lo que nos quiere decir con esa representación. Como si el dorso fuese un símbolo de desdeño, de «ignoración», de ausencia, instalado en el entorno vacio en el que se sumerge. Soledad, individualidad, aislamiento, ninguneo del personaje y, a su vez, el retratado hace lomismo con el espectador. Vivir de espaldas al contexto. Estar en el ensimismamiento y manifestarlo en sumáxima crudeza. El sentir del abandono o de no creer ser interesante para nadie, podría ser el resumen de quién se muestra en la condición que Coves nos aporta. El inmigrante defraudado de su ilusión original, de constatar que aquellas oportunidades que se dibujaron en su mente, son vanas, del fenómeno de melancolía y desánimo. O por el contrario, de rabia yenfadoconelmundopor hacerloculpablede su situación. De cualquiermodo, nos lo esconde. Amaga los rasgos de la cara y lamirada. Reserva el alma.
