The silences inJaumePlensa’s thinking The sculptor of the soul His entire oeuvre is considered an invitation to internal withdrawal. The small Roussillon townof Céret –‘the cherry capital’ asmany know it– is home towhatmight be considered some of hismore representativeworks: three installations and five of hismonumental busts. For example, Silhouettes ismade upof steel profiles that are hung from the ceiling, appearing tomeander suspended in space. Eachof themmakes a thought fly, an important and inspiringpoem for theCatalan sculptor. His famous seated figures are alsopresent: Air,Water, Void (2014) , which change colour for the occasionwhilst they appear tomaintain amysterious coded conversation. The exhibition is completedby five of his enormous basalt or bronze faces, inspired in real peoplewho have captured the artist’s attention at onepoint or another. The closed eyes lead us to daydream, to universal meditation. Body, language andpoetry are the recurringmuses that he never ceases to explore amongst the multiplepossibilities offeredby light, video and sound, especially in the case of hismoremonumental works. Céret’s Modern Art Museumwas founded in 1950 by Pierre Brune andFrankBurtyHaviland, twopainterswho tookon thechallengeof creating amodern art museum by taking advantage of the fact that Céret was an artistic refuge and a meeting point for artists of the period. Picasso donated 53 of his works andMatisse 14 drawings, thus becoming champions of themuseum, which is home toworks from 20th-century painters such as Picasso, Braque, Gris, Soutin, Chagall, Herbin, Matisse, Masson, Kremègne, Miró, Tàpies, Viallat, Toni Grand andBioulès, amongstmany others.
