Paul Cadden (Glasgow, Scottland, 1964 Paul Cadden Professionally trained as adesigner and illustrator, all of Cadden’s drawings andpaintings start out from photographic images or videophotograms – loyal to his intention toovercome the reachof photography itself, whosebasic function is limited toproviding amore subtle, more complex focus on the subject/ object in frame. He intensifies the effect of the focus bymeans ofmeticulous efforts on eachdetail, gesture or feature: creating the illusionof a new reality that canbarely be appreciated in thephoto. In the same way that advertisingmanipulates us for thebenefit of certain interests, it is alsopossible to ‘educate’ people’s sensitivity to art bymeans of a skilful and insightful handle on the technique. Cadden’swork is highly subjective, highly personal.Whether pencil or watercolour, he touches on the typically invisible and makes it visible, confessing that if heweren’t an artist, hewouldhavebeen amarinebiologist or vet, given his great love for nature. His obsessionwithdetail is that of agreat observer, a hunter ofmoments andgestures, ever diving into common scenes attractedby different cultures and context. This approach afforded toCadden thanks tohis impeccable hyper-realist skills gives him a great freedomof aesthetic criteria, which itself is something very characteristic of hiswork. Underneath the representation seenby the viewer there is thedetail, and it this iswhat provides the information required to awakenour senses and emotions. I findmyself fascinatedby theway inwhichwe aremanipulated through andby themedia; by theway inparticular interests canbe favoured, andby the suppressionof certain information or points of view. This can ultimately lead to personal cynicism and alienation. Nevertheless, I think that art can challenge this alienation, and that it instead canbe highly satisfying. Paul Cadden MitchGriffiths. Paul Cadden (Glasgow, Escocia, 1964) 54
