FaustoMartín The nostalgia ofmonochrome A native of Leon, where hewas born in 1965,Martín has lived inMadrid since hewas three and is a graduate of theSchool of AppliedArts andArtisticProfessions, where he studiedArt and Illustration inAdvertising. He usuallyworkswithgraphite on a surface adapted to thework inquestion. The robustness of thismedium gives himgreater freedom inhis choice of technique and workmedia. Really, I think that black andwhite is somethingof a nostalgia addict: itmakes any vision, any scene look memorable, however superficial and simple as itmay seemon first sight. However, this is the visionof an artist, and the city is full of corners, details and hidey- holes.Metro entrances,monumental sculptures so often seen they are now invisible, oldgateddoorways, pieces of pavement. All are fragments of urban life that arepassedover in a hurry but then flourish in the light of sensitivity, like thirsty rootings indamp peat. Transforming undesirable stress into aesthetics, Martín honours the everyday, skilfullymaking use of monochromes’s inherent touchof dramabut always sincerely, unfussily. Hiswork Glance from the Inside has just been singledout with amentionof honour in themost recent editionof the international Figurativas competitionorganisedbyBarcelona’s European MuseumofModernArt. Oriundo de León, donde nació en 1965, vive y en Madrid desde los tres años y es licenciado enArtePublicitario e Ilustraciónpor suEscuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos. Trabaja habitualmente el grafito sobre una tabla cuya textura adecúa a la obra en cuestión. La robustez de este soporte le concede más libertades en la elección de técnicas y medios de trabajo. Realmente creo que el blanco y negro es adicto a lo nostálgico, porque es susceptible de hacer memorable cualquier visión, cualquier escena, por muy superficial o simple que ésta pudiera parecer a simple vista. Pero ésta es la visión de un artista, y la ciudad rebosa rincones, detalles, escondrijos. Bocas de metro, monumentales esculturasque a curade estar, yanadie ve; antiguos portalesconenrejados, pedazosdeacera, retazosde la vidaurbana que se escapan a la prisa pero prenden en la sensibilidad como esquejes ávidos de agua sobre la turba húmeda. Transmutando el indeseable estrés en estética, honra lo cotidiano, sirviéndose hábilmente del toque de dramatismo inherente al blanco y negro, pero con sinceridad y sin aspavientos. Su trabajo titulado Vistazo desde el interior , acaba de ser destacado conmenciónde honor en laúltimaedicióndel concurso internacional Figurativas queorganiza el MuseoEuropeodeArteModerno (Barcelona).
